May be a stupid question

Let me preface this by saying I am not a biblical scholar! ;0)

I always assumed that the reason certain religions didn't allow priests to marry was because it was in the bible (somewhere) that they can't/shouldn't. But yesterday's reading in Lev 21 it does state that they are allowed to marry (with rules of course). I guess I just found that interesting and curious... got me thinking. Where in the bible does it say priests can't marry, or does it? And if it doesn't specify they can't marry, why then would the Catholic Church not allow it?

Just curious

  2. The Catholic Church isn't the only church that doesn't allow it. There are other orthodoxies, I believe. The flip side of that is Jewish rabbis are encouraged to marry and raise families.

I think it's from Paul in the NT. He writes in 1Cor. 7 that if a man can be unmarried he can focus better on serving the Lord. Married men (and women, he adds) have their attention divided by concerns of the world. He doesn't seem to be condemning either choice but does clearly feel that the singler person has less to worry about. True dat.
