Got a little confused

Maybe someone can clarify.... The first part of the reading today Jesus says the following:
9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works. 11 Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else believe on account of the works themselves.

But then later in the reading he says:
28 You heard me say to you, ‘I am going away, and I will come to you.’ If you loved me, you would have rejoiced, because I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I.

I guess that confuses me because in one area he is the Father and in the next the Father is greater.

Any insights on this LMK - Just wanted to disect that a little more w/ the group.

  1. I'll have to look into it further tomorrow...but my initial thoughts are that the first part is a declaration of his divinity. It's also referencing the trinity, in part, because while Jesus was fully human, he was also fully God.

The second part seems to refer to Jesus' humanity, in that he could physically die. The disciples never knew a leader who could be raised from the dead. They were partially still hoping for a political ruler who would provide for an earthly kingdom, and didn't completely understand a King who ruled from heaven.

  2. Well that would make more sense...Being a newbie to reading the FULL bible I just was confused as I was reading. Although I do understand that Jesus is fully human and fully God...Sometimes my mind still sort of pictures God bigger than Jesus(at times)because he created Jesus so sometimes it is hard to understand the trinity. I sort of picture a Dad/child structure in my mind.
